Sewing Machine Through the Years

1910

National Sewing Machine Company made many variations of machines including Rotary model sold in cabinets and powered by treadle or hand crank.  These machines were limited to straight stitching.

Kenmore name debuts on Sears Roebuck Machines.

1911

The Singer 99 was a 3/4 size version of the established full size class 66. Many of the mechanisms had the same parts other than the basic body casting and came with a wooden case for when the machine was not in use. The 99K stayed in production until around 1958. 

1921

The Pine Sewing Machinery Mfg. Co., Ltd Factory was founded in Tokyo, later renamed Janome Sewing Machine Co., Ltd for the new class 15 metal bobbin system used rather than the traditional long shuttle types resembling the eye of a snake, becoming the first domestic sewing machine manufacturer in Japan.  Making affordable machines for the average Tokyo family, releasing the Pine Model 500 which sold for about 30 yen in 1945. 

Singer introduces the first electric portable model of the Singer 99.  The 99K stayed in production until 1958.

1933

Singer introduces the featherweight at the Chicago World's Fair.

This compact marvel, first introduced in the 1930s, is known for its portability, lightweight design, and exceptional stitch quality. 1940

Elna was founded, it is speculated that its name is a shortened form of the German word for “electric sewing machine”and released a compact, portable, and electronic sewing machine, the first of its kind with a free arm named the Elna #1 or by users as the Grasshopper for its distinctive green color and the knee control, when folded, resembles the jumping leg or femur when folded up.



1947

Juki released its brands first Household Sewing Machine (HA-1) 

1948

At the request of Masuzou Maeda, a representative of the Imperial Sewing Machine Company (predecessor of Janome), the standard dimensions of domestic household sewing machines are unified, and this sewing machine category is called "household HA-1 type" 

1952

Elna released the Supermatic, which introduced Cams to automatically control stitches by moving the needle sideways as well as reverse feed of the fabric, making way for the "Zig Zag Boom".  The case being used as a table when not storing the machine.

Singer releases the Class 400 Slant-o-Matic, the first zigzag machine for its brand.  The slant-o-Matic featured a slant shank and rotary hook, using class 66 bobbins and 15x1 needles.

1954

Janome Sewing Industry Co Ltd, would release the 320 Type for 24,000 yen. 

1961

Janome Sewing Industry Co Ltd acquired New Home Sewing Machine and the following year they released the 560 Type for 40,000 yen. The first fully automatic zigzag using a cam rather than manually adjusting the lever or dial.

1964

Janome Sewing Industry Co Ltd, released the 670 Type High Dream for 40,000 yen, commemorating the Tokyo Olympics which was half as heavy as its predecessor.  Elna releases its Star Series featuring built-in, and interchangeable decorative stitches as well as an automatic buttonhole. 

1968

Elna released the Lotus, a compact and lightweight machine, an innovative and expressive design that is now reflected in contemporary versions of the lotus, where the table doubles as a protective case.  Elna has truly blossomed with this extraordinary creation, ushering in a new era of creativity and imagination in the world of sewing. 

1971

Janome's Model 801 was a fully automatic ZZ sewing machine with many unique functions, was released as the 50th anniversary model. 

1975

Janome releases XL-II the brands first model using cams and the free arm. 

Singer releases the Athena 2000, the worlds first electronic sewing machine.

1976

Janome’s 813 type Excel sold for 146,000 yen and was the first major domestic model to use a free arm. It also had a built-in cam and 2 step buttonhole.  

1978

Elna released its Air Electronic, using a pneumatic foot control, relying on air pressure to control the speed and operation of the machine. 

Singer releases the first computer controlled machine,  Touchtronic 2001

1979

Janome's Memory 7 (5001 type Memoria sold for 188,000 yen) , the world's first programmable computer sewing machine, was introduced with the introduction of stepping motors.

1980

Elna released its Stella model which retained many features of the Lotus, but improved upon many features.

1982

"Kenmore Sensor Sew One Hundred". Was released which is identical to Neechi’s Logica.  Elna releases its Carina model, which is the first sewing machine to use Super Overlock stitches on all types of fabrics. 

1983

Janome released 6000 Type Memory Craft 208,000, because of its ease of use, it became popular worldwide that it was exported via air to be available to consumers as soon as possible. 

1985

Elna released the Elna 5000, the first Swiss sewing machine with an electric memory and first in their computerized lineup. 

Singer releases its line of "miracle machines" to suit every style and budget.

1986

Janome releases a unique machine with two functions: straight stitch / zigzag stitch sewing and overlock sewing. Easy to switch between a zigzag sewing machine to an overlock sewing machine by revolving the turntable. 

1987

Elna releases its Elna 7000, using cassettes to expand stitch packages.



1988

Sears 24 Stitch available in the 1988 Sears Catalog, model 385.17641.

1990

Janome's Memory Craft 8000 was the first home use computer sewing machine with embroidery functions in the world.  

1991

Janome released its 8100 type, Cecio 266,000 yen, commemorating its 70th anniversary of its founding. 

1992

Kenmore introduced more built in looks with Euro-Design (385.12714).  

Elna releases its DIVA model with 370 stitches, 7 buttonholes, and alphabet and monogramming. 

1994

Elna would release the 9006 a computerized embroidery machine. 

1996

Brother releases PEDESIGN, software to digitize embroidery.  

Brother also releases PC-8200 and PE-100 

1997

Babylock releases Esante, Espree, bl9500, BL6600, BL6150, BL2160, BL1556, BL101, BL2600, BL2300K and BL1750.
